Jane Swan

Jane Swan

I have recently moved back to Delabole, North Cornwall, where I was born. I have created a studio in an industrial unit at Pentire Workshops.

I am an English watercolorist on a LARGE scale. I paint on a working stretcher on the floor. I am excited by the smell of wet, unprimed 15oz cotton duck and its drumlike tautness when stretched and the dispersal of heavy bodied acrylic paint in water.

My paintings are often about the colour that isn’t there. I like to play with the way a colour ‘calls’ for its complementary and refuse to supply it, or only in a buried form in greys and browns in earths and metals. This is the engine that drives the paintings.

The size of the paintings has nothing to do with convenience and everything to do with my physical involvement in the painting process. I want the viewer to share this involvement. Viewing essential.
